A Pure and Remote View: Lecture 1 – Introduction and Pre-Han Pictorial Art I begin by introducing my three major teachers, and go on to outline the background of the series: I introduce Ernst Gombrich as a model for the kind of art-historical narrative I will attempt, but also emphasize the strong tradition of critical and historical writing in China that underlies my account. This first lecture ends with a brief introduction to early pictorial art in China: Neolithic painted pots, hunting-style bronzes, the earliest paintings on silk from Changsha. Lecture 2 – Han Painting and Pictorial Designs This lecture considers the growth of pictorial art during the Han dynasty BCE to CE , beginning with paintings on silk including the famous “flying garment” from the tombs at Changsha, continuing with pictures on tomb objects mingqi and lacquer designs, and ending with the remarkable relief pictures on tomb tiles found in Sichuan. Early renderings of space and the beginnings of expressive brushwork are revealed in visual analyses of all these. Lecture 3 – Six Dynasties Painting and Pictorial Designs The third lecture treats the pictorial art of the variously named period between the Han and Tang dynasties, a period of political division and warfare during which relative peace in the Yangzi Delta region around Nanjing permitted the emergence there of major artists and a flourishing tradition of picture making. Detailed looking at scroll paintings ascribed to one artist, Gu Kaizhi, introduces issues of dating and the faithfulness of copies after a lost original; brief discussions of two early essays open a continuing consideration of the rich Chinese critical and theoretical literature on painting. Tomb paintings of the early Tang, works associated with the legendary figure master Wu Daozi, reliable copies after palace-lady pictures by Zhou Fang and others together with one original, make up a detailed exploration of this greatest age of figure painting in China.

By John Swartzberg How dogs and cats may help your heart. Back when she was younger and friskier, I used to bring my golden retriever with me to the UC Berkeley campus for some of my lectures. She’d plop her furry frame down next to me while I was speaking and flash her classic “golden smile” at the hall full of students. There’s nothing scientific to this, of course, but I’m quite certain that everyone in my class was much more happy when she was around than when I came to class without her.
Sometimes I think they would have preferred that she ran the class! Pets make people happy. It’s hard to argue with this, although not everyone is an animal person, of course. Still, about 60 percent of American households have at least one pet, and there are about million cats and dogs here–perhaps more than half the human population. It’s, pretty clear that our furry and sometimes feathered or scaly friends bring joy to our lives.

Cut loose by UC Berkeley, hyperlocal site Mission Local looks to spin off as a for-profit Once lauded as an early example of the teaching hospital model of journalism education, Mission Local will now fend for itself outside the j-school. By Joseph Lichterman ylichterman Feb. One of their major recommendations was that universities should become more engaged in producing reporting for their communities.
While [Berkeley professor Lydia] Chavez would have liked to see the school keep the site, she is ready to assume responsibility for the site, and we expect that it will continue under her ownership. Berkeley pays to operate the site all year, even though the graduate class affiliated with Mission Local is offered only for the fall semester. The rest of the time the site is run by a smaller corps of Berkeley students as well as a mix of students other local universities, freelancers, community contributors, and interns.

Over the past year, Spring Mansion was given a fresh new look. The result returns the exterior close to the original state and it is easy to see why, in the days before the hillside was forested, the mansion resembled a glittering jewel visible from San Francisco across the bay. Wide terraces with balustrades wrap around three sides of the 80X84 ft. Inside, under the direction of celebrity designer Cora Sue Anthony, many rooms in the Mansion have undergone an elegant metamorphosis.
Of particular note is the updated palette of the grand entry hall.

His system for naming, ranking, and classifying organisms is still in wide use today with many changes. His ideas on classification have influenced generations of biologists during and after his own lifetime, even those opposed to the philosophical and theological roots of his work. His father, Nils Ingemarsson Linnaeus, was both an avid gardener and a Lutheran pastor, and Carl showed a deep love of plants and a fascination with their names from a very early age.
UC Berkeley is home to some of the greatest minds whose research and academic accomplishments have transformed the world. From the development of the atomic bomb to the Free Speech Movement, UC Berkeley is steeped in a rich history of excellence dating back to the founding years of the university.
Back in the ’60s, Berkeley became national shorthand for college campus protests, where students by the thousands simultaneously celebrated, demonstrated, and demanded freedom of speech and expression from government officials the students considered insufficiently open to their burgeoning anti-establishment ideas and frustrations. Times change, and now Berkeley officials — perhaps to their own bemusement — find themselves representing a new Establishment: The university is currently facing a federal lawsuit that Alliance Defending Freedom filed on behalf of students seeking official recognition for their organization, the aforementioned Young Americans for Liberty.
Berkeley officials withheld that recognition, claiming YAL is too similar to an already authorized group, the “Cal Libertarians,” to justify a separate existence in its own right. One, once a university begins recognizing clubs, it really has no place discriminating by deciding who should and who should not make up a particular club, or which clubs should be combined with each other. As YAL mentioned in its application, it is aware of the Cal Libertarian club but has opted to form its own organization.
And two, the university — if it does decide to make itself the sole arbiter of which clubs will be recognized — should have to present clear, reasonable, and most importantly objective criteria for granting or withholding that recognition. James , for instance, the high court ruled that a school must justify any decision to deny legitimacy to a club on something other than administrators’ personal distaste for that club’s point of view.
Otherwise, the decision comes down to institutional discrimination, not administrative discernment.
